May First Friday Art Party for “GREENVILLE THROUGH A LENS”
Join us at Good Art Co. on Friday, May 1st from 6pm—9pm for free refreshments and a deep dive into this cultural powerhouse of an exhibition at Good Art Co.!
Curated by the Cunningham Arts Foundation, "Greenville Through a Lens" is a celebration of Greenville's rich history as interpreted through the lens of visual and performing arts during a black tie art party. Good Art Co. will be hosting the work from that one night celebration throughout the month of May featuring works by founder and fine artist Timothy Cunningham, alongside local creatives PHOR, Orlando Corona, RaAmen Stallings, Peggy Dillard-Toone, Corigan Cunningham, and Lloyd Toone.
A percentage of all sales proceeds will be donated to the Young Brothers Academy of Greenville for the betterment of youth programs in Greenville county, and this project is funded in part by the Jolley Foundation, Community Foundation of Greenville, the South Carolina Arts Commission, and the Metropolitan Arts Council.

Pastel Portrait Workshop

2-Day Pastel Portrait Workshop with Christine Swann
“Pastel Portrait Workshop”
May 23rd-24th
9:30am-4:00pm
Build a portrait over this 2-day workshop using the 5-layer process of master pastelist, Christine Swann. Along with learning how to control the pastel medium, students will learn about the Law of Light and the Rules of Light to paint anything more realistically. You will never paint the same way again.
MATERIALS LIST :
PAPER - a gritted, pastel surface will be supplied.
PORTRAIT REFERENCE - will need a photo reference to use for the classes. I will supply the reference I am using to everyone in the class or you can use any reference that you want to draw from of your own as long as it meets the following criteria:
It has a strong lit area on the face.
It has some shadows somewhere on the face.
It has clear highlights on the face. This is very important!
It is large enough and clear enough to see the “crease” above the lash line above the eyes. If you can not clearly see this line in the photo then the photo reference will not be good enough to work from. I suggest you use mine.
It will be beneficial to get pencils in the following colors because as we go along in the initial drawing, it is beneficial to change colors and "reset" the drawing in newer, darker colors. The key is to get at least 4 values and color changes - from a light ochre color up to darker browns and then a black. Any brands are fine.
A yellow pencil will also be needed. If you only have one yellow pencil, just keep an exacto blade nearby to sharpen as needed.
The brands of pencils do not matter. I use different brands. I keep an Exacto blade nearby, but I never worry about a "perfect" point. You should not either.
PASTELS - You will need pastel sticks from each “category” below. *The 3/4 power category is optional. The more low-chroma colors the better in each category. Please don't feel as though you need to buy more sticks. I am a big believer in not having to have every single brand out there. As long as you have a pretty good range of colors in at least one brand in each of the categories below you are all set. The more pastel pencils the better.
Pastel CATEGORIES:
LOW POWER - all pastel pencils (no matter what brand) Rembrandts, Nupastels, Creatacolors or any old square Grumbachers ***Please bring as many pastel pencils as you can.
MEDIUM POWER - Giraults, Winsor Newton, Blue Earth, Diane Townsend, Mount Vision, Unisons, Older Richesons or any old round Grumbachers,
3/4 POWER-- OPTIONAL --- Terry Ludwigs, Newer Richesons, Schminckes, Ming Art Pastels
HIGH POWER - Senneliers, Great Americans, Roches
If you have questions on what you have or what you need, please reach out.
